Coloradan faces jail for refusal to show ID

DENVER -- Deborah Davis' refusal to show her identification to federal police at a bus stop has turned her into a cause celebre among privacy-rights advocates.
Mrs. Davis, a 50-year-old Arvada, Colo., grandmother of five, was handcuffed, placed in a police car and ticketed for two petty offenses by Federal Protective Services officers who were checking passengers' identification Sept. 26 aboard a Regional Transportation District (RTD) bus at the Federal Center stop.
She faces a maximum of 60 days in jail. First, however, federal prosecutors must decide whether to pursue the charges before her hearing Dec. 9 in U.S. District Court here.
"We have a couple of decisions to make -- whether to proceed with the charges, whether to proceed with different charges or whether to drop the charges," said Jeff Dorschner, spokesman for the U.S. attorney's office in Denver.
He said prosecutors would decide how to proceed early next week.
The American Civil Liberties Union has agreed to take her case if it goes to court, and she also is represented by lawyers from the same Denver law firm that defended NBA star Kobe Bryant last year on sexual-assault charges.
Not bad for a woman who's looking for work after losing her job last month as a result of the confrontation with federal police.
It started when Mrs. Davis began commuting to her new job in Lakewood aboard an RTD bus that made a regular stop at the Denver Federal Center. Each time, federal police boarded the bus and asked passengers for ID.
Mrs. Davis produced her driver's license once, but it rankled her. The next few times, she begged off, saying she had left her ID at home. Finally, an officer told Mrs. Davis that she would need to show proof of her identity the following Monday.
Several things bothered her about the ID checks. She wasn't entering a federal building or even leaving the bus. The officers barely glanced at the passengers' ID cards and didn't check them against a master list. The whole exercise struck her as "just Big Brother watching you," she said.
"I spent the weekend trying to decide if the Constitution had changed since I was in eighth grade, and I decided it hadn't," said Mrs. Davis, who has a son serving in the Army in Iraq.
The following Monday, after the officers boarded the bus, one of them "asked me if I had my ID with me, and I said, 'Yes,' " she recalled. "Then he asked me if he could see it and I said, 'No.' "

Mrs. Davis had been talking on her cell phone when the officers approached. "One of them grabbed my cell phone and threw it to the back of the bus," she said.
"The next thing I knew, two big policemen jerked me out of my seat, handcuffed me and threw me in the back of the police car," Mrs. Davis said. "They wrote the tickets and threw them on the ground."
Carl Rusnok, spokesman for the Immigration and Customs Enforcement, which oversees the Federal Protective Service, said the practice of checking IDs at the bus stop was instituted after the 1995 bombing of the Oklahoma City federal building.
The cursory bus check is part of a "multilayered security system," he said. "There are 9,000 federal facilities in the country, and virtually every one of them requires an ID check."
Bill Scannell, a privacy-rights activist who started a Web site last week about the incident (www.papersplease.org/davis/) said it has received more than 2 million hits since Thanksgiving. Some backers have called Mrs. Davis the "Rosa Parks of the Patriot Act generation," he said.

Looking for Hate in all the Wrong Places

Each year, the Stephen Roth Institute at Tel Aviv University issues a comprehensive report, “Antisemitism Worldwide.” This is the definitive account of anti-Semitic attitudes, groups, and leaders around the globe.

Perusing the chapters on the United States, I was struck by a troubling thought: These “experts” are looking for Jew hatred in all the wrong places.

The most recent report (2003-4) looks at the activities of genuine racists like David Duke, Richard Butler (who died in 2004) and Louis Farrakhan. It details which neo-Nazi groups are rising in influence and which are falling. (Nearly all have been falling, thanks to the death or imprisonment of leaders and the perpetual disarray of would-be leaders, who tend to hate each other as much as they hate Jews.)

The report also chooses some odd targets. It mentions the militia movement, for instance, even though it acknowledges that most of the now failed and faded militia groups weren't anti-Semitic. And it considers the entire “tax protest” movement to be anti-Semitic, which simply runs counter to all available evidence. The tax protest movement has no inherent racial or religious bias.

Including non-bigots in a report on bigotry, however, is the least of the problems. Far worse: the “experts” are failing to include the one institution that is, historically, the greatest danger to the Jews: government.

While focusing on the gnat of tiny, marginal racist groups and innocent non-racists, the scholars in Tel Aviv are entirely missing the velociraptor of the state.

Fatal shortsightedness

A quote that appears in both the 2001-2 and 2002-3 reports makes it clear just how very blind and biased the hate-hunters are: “Militia groups in the United States have decreased in number in the past few years, but still pose a criminal threat, as they encourage turning anti-government sentiment into action.”

The italics are ours. This statement, in the context of a report on anti-Semitism, makes it clear that the writers consider any action that opposes government to be a threat against Jews. (This is also the likely reason the report includes anti-taxers to be threatening; refusal to pay taxes is an extremely direct and fundamental anti-government action.)

In modern America, under both Democrat and Republican administrations, most Jews have embraced the power of government. In alliance with Democrats, Jews have lobbied for, and risen to political power within, the welfare state. In alliance with Republicans, masses of Jews have continued to urge the growth of the welfare state while a handful of Jews have been among the most prominent architects of the neoconservative warfare state, along with WASPs like George W. Bush and Dick Cheney.

Adopting government as a protector and partner is a mistake Jews have made before. As we shall see shortly, it's a strategy that has backfired on us throughout history.

Jews are often friends of government. But in the long run, governments are never friends to the Jews.

Before we examine the history, though, let's look at a few of the contemporary American actions that haven't been included in the annual reports from the Stephen Roth Institute.

In November 2002, Jewish Defense League leader Irv Rubin died violently while in federal custody. His death was immediately dismissed as a suicide. But since his throat was slit just before he plunged off a balcony onto his head, many people doubt the official verdict. The U.S. chapter of “Antisemitism Worldwide” for 2002 never mentions this. It never mentions that the U.S. government was responsible for Rubin's welfare, or that the government failed to thoroughly investigate the violent death of a prominent and controversial Jewish man in its custody.

I hope the 2004-5 “Antisemitism Worldwide” report will mention the equally chilling fate of JDL coordinator Earl Krugel. Almost three years to the day after Rubin's death, Rubin's colleague and alleged co-conspirator Krugel was slammed over the head with a concrete block while in the exercise yard of a federal prison and died. Krugel was just three days into a 20-year sentence for conspiring with Rubin to blow up congressman's office and a mosque full of worshippers.

(I have no sympathy for Rubin or Krugel's terrorism plans and am glad such plans were never carried out. But anyone who cares about justice ought to ask why prison officials left a concrete block in a prison exercise yard. And why the government leaves controversial Jewish prisoners to the mercy of white supremacist and black Muslim inmates. And why mainstream Jewish groups are so consistently silent about or contemptful of any Jews, like those in the JDL, who believe in armed self-defense.)

The report from Tel Aviv also doesn't mention the scandal that erupted at the United States Air Force Academy in 2003, when high-level officers and administrators created a climate in which Jewish cadets were called “filthy Jews” and informed that the Holocaust was payback for “killing Christ.” The report made no protest when Christian cadets at the Academy were allowed time off to attend religious activities while Jewish students were forbidden similar observances.

Nor do the reports mention Alan Cotton, a Jewish prisoner who had to fight three years of legal battles with Florida government officials before being allowed Kosher food.

All across the country, prison officials have similarly attempted to deny many other Jews Kosher meals or basic religious practices. Although the prisoners often prevail in court, the government officials holding them show no basic respect for their rights or their religion.

But the “experts” on anti-Semitism are silent on these examples of Jew-hatred or contempt for Judaism.

And what of Jonathan Pollard, the U.S. Naval Intelligence officer sentenced to life in prison in 1987 (with a recommendation for no parole)? The charge against this young Jewish man involved passing “non-injurious classified information to an ally” -- Israel. Pollard claims only to have passed information vital to Israel's security -- information that the U.S. was supposed to share with Israel under 1983 security memorandum and was illegally withholding.

The median sentence for such a crime is two to four years. No other person has ever received a life sentence for spying for an ally in peacetime. But then-Defense secretary Caspar Weinberger presented secret evidence to the court that none of Pollard's subsequent attorneys have even been allowed to look at. And Pollard, who had been promised a light sentence in return for his guilty plea, still rots in jail nearly 20 years later.

The “experts” don't list the continuing punishment of Pollard as an act of Jew-hatred. Yet it's far harsher than than the insults, sleaze-literature, and vandalism produced by most so-called “hate groups.”

Why the blind spot? Why do scholars and experts whose job is to monitor Jew-hatred so blatantly fail to spot it when it's sponsored or tolerated by government? Why are these experts so doggedly concerned with a few lunatic losers in the neo-Nazi movement and so unconcerned about Jew-hatred or abuse of Jews within the most powerful institution in the entire world – the U.S. government?

Only they can know for certain – if they think about their shortsightedness at all. But I believe the answer lies in something I noted above: Most contemporary Jews in the developed world see government as ally, protector, and useful tool. Therefore in their minds governments – at least democratic western governments – can't be anti-Semitic, even when the evidence says otherwise.

A journey back in time

Any Jew who considers the government to be a benevolent force should read a book called The Fatal Embrace: Jews and the State by Benjamin Ginsberg (University of Chicago Press, 1993). The title explains Ginsberg's thesis: Jews who ally with government set themselves up for betrayal and destruction.

Through the 2,000 years of the diaspora, Jews have sought places of welcome and peace. Many countries have rejected us outright or grudgingly accepted, but ghettoized, marginalized, and persecuted us. In a few cases, however, countries have opened their arms wide to Jews. Repeatedly, in places like these, Jews have prospered – momentarily. As Ginsberg puts it, “Jews have achieved enormous status, wealth, and power only to be cast down, driven out – or worse.”

Even more ominously, once a country turns on its Jewish population, the persecution of Jews actually becomes a means of achieving political power. Persecution becomes not only acceptable, but useful.

Toleration – which we value so highly today – turns out to be ephemeral. When a government needs the abilities of Jews, it accepts (and sometimes even especially favors) us. But once a regime becomes corrupt and unpopular, reformers turn angrily upon it. Often, instead of blaming the government itself for its misdeeds, opponents blame Jews for influencing government. They turn on us savagely. And in turn, so do the former “friends” of Jews. Instead of standing by us, they rush to disassociate themselves with our alleged corruption.

It happened in Spain during the Middle Ages. That country welcomed Jews when few others would. For hundreds of years, Spain and Spanish Jews benefited each other. Then in 1369 (as Ginsberg recounts), Henry II of Trastamara overthrew his half-brother Pedro I, who had been closely identified with Jews.

For the next 100+ years, Spanish Jews were victims of forced conversions, pogroms, and the notorious Spanish Inquisition. Finally, in 1492, they were expelled altogether. Between the conversions and the expulsion, ironically, some now-nominally Christian Jews became even more closely allied with the Castilian state. But this in turn created even more Jew-hatred.

(Interestingly, in light of the modern anti-Semitism “experts” who consider tax protest to be a form of Jew-hatred, part of the popular resistance to powerful Spanish Jews grew from the fact that they were perceived as being responsible for punitively high taxes imposed on the lower classes.)

Hatred of Jews was a direct cause of the Spanish Inquisition. And although the Inquisition had nominally religious roots, the Spanish monarchy used it as a savage tool of state control for the next 200 years – a convenient means to destroy not only Jews but any political enemies or any troublesome individuals whose confiscated wealth could enrich the coffers of church and state.

Ginsberg notes that what happened in Spain helps us understand what happened hundreds of years later in Nazi Germany. The Nazis rose to power in response to the corrupt, ineffective, liberal (and as many German's perceived it, Jew-dominated) Weimar Republic. But the Nazis didn't merely hate and eventually exterminate Jews. They made Jew-hatred a state-building exercise – constructing entire bureaucracies to deal with the Jews and vastly expanding the power of government in the name of ridding Germany of “the Jewish menace.”

Individual racial hatred may be a terrible thing. But it pales in comparison to institutional hatred. And America is not immune. We should never believe otherwise, no matter how comfortable and prosperous we get.

Only a minority of Ginsberg's book is dedicated to history. Most of it deals with twentieth-century, post-WWII America and how Jews have gained – and could lose – power within the embrace of the state. Even though the book ends more than a decade ago – long before “neoconservative” because a common code-word for “Jew” among sleazier political commentators – Ginsberg shows that the dangers and divisions are already present within the American political structure.

For instance, he shows how Jews aligned themselves with blacks in the Democrat party, perceiving that both groups had a common interest in civil liberties. But that alliance and its tax-and-spend goals drove southern and rural whites (a traditional Democrat constituency) out of the party. Then, as blacks became more powerful, they began to turn on their Jewish allies. Today, blacks are the only cultural group in American among whom blatant anti-Semitism is socially acceptable.

Although the scholars of “Antisemitism Worldwide” point only to men like Farrakhan or Malik Zulu Shabazz of the New Black Panther party (who are definitely virulent Jew-haters), Ginsberg notes that the most harsh anti-Semitism in the black population may actually be among the black professional and academic classes, whose members regard Jews as competitors for their piece of the American pie, and who often side with Palestinians and other Arabs. Their anti-Semitism might be more polite, less loudly spoken – and ultimately more harmful than that of the hate groups.

The American left, once the philosophical home of Jews, is now in a long, slow process of turning away from Jews, Judiasm, and the nation of Israel. On college campuses around the country, the fashion is to be pro-Palestine and to consider Israeli Jews (and by extension, Jews in general) to be oppressors – even to be “Nazis.” This process, too, echoes the shifts of history. Jews remain in favor only as long as the powers that be have use for us. Once the facade of toleration cracks, Jews remain “the outsider,” “the other,” and the target of easy blame for anything that goes wrong with society. Friends of Jews quickly rush to become former friends.

America is obviously not yet at, or even near, the point Spain or Germany reached. But the message of history is clear. Jews who make alliances with the state do so at their own peril. Tolerance is fragile and lasts only as long as it is fashionable among the controlling classes or useful to the governing classes.

America has the world's largest concentration of Jews. Yet we are still only about 2.2 percent of the total U.S. population – a minority among minorities, and vulnerable to every outrage minorities can suffer. We are also a minority widely disliked – both by neo-Nazi lunatics and by many of our former friends in the American political and academic establishments.

Remember the lesson of history. The moment toleration becomes a liability to the ruling class, we Jews become a liability to the state – and the state becomes a deadly liability to us.

The “experts” on anti-Semitism should open their eyes and acknowledge this most dangerous historic fact.

JPFO ALERT: THE _REAL_ DANGER TO JEWISH PEOPLE
      (IT MAY BE OTHER JEWS!)

Quick - in 10 seconds, name the top three real dangers to
Jewish people in the world.

Time's up.  Chances are you identified one or more of these
true threats to Jews:  Palestinian terror bombers, growing
violent anti-Semitism in Europe, and radical segments of
the Arab/Muslim world.

Did you even for a moment consider "American Christians" as
a primary danger to Jews?  JPFO would never even imagine
it.

Leave it to Abe Foxman, national director of the Anti-
Defamation League (ADL), to lash out against evangelical
Christians in America.  That's right - Foxman is raising
money from his loyal supporters on the pretext that such
Christians pose a serious threat to American Jews.

Unsurprisingly, Foxman and the ADL are strongly anti-
rights, and support the most prohibitive of "gun control"
regimes.  The ADL routinely aligns itself with the heavily
statist, socialist, big government forces on the political
Left.  It is the political Left that screams to have the
Jewish Ten Commandments removed from every public place in
America. It is the Left that today most vocally attacks
Israel, the only state in the Middle East that is
democratic, and the only state in the world that is openly
Jewish.

Meanwhile, evangelical Christians in America tend to be
pro-rights, pro-Constitution, pro-Ten Commandments, and
pro-self defense.  Evangelical Christians overwhelmingly
support Israel's right to exist, and they frequently reach
out to support Jews in America and other nations.

So why does it make sense for the self-described Jewish ADL
to attack the strongly pro-Israel and pro-Jewish group in
America?  Why does it make sense for the ADL to align with
the Left that hates Israel while sympathizing with homicide
bombers?

We at JPFO suggest these answers. 

Fundamentally, Foxman and the ADL are statist socialists
first and foremost, Americans a distant second, and Jewish
dead last.  By contrast, evangelical Christianity tends to
favor Biblical values which include ideas of limited
government, individual freedom, and personal and family
responsibility.  Evangelical Christians lean strongly
toward loving American values and traditions.

Morally, Foxman and the ADL are cowardly.  If they attack
American Christians, the Christians will respond by writing
letters and speaking out -- at most.  If Foxman and the ADL
attack radical Muslims or European anti-Semites, the
responses very likely might be assassinations and bombings
that kill Jews and others.  So, Foxman and the ADL shoot at
friendlies instead of real enemies, knowing the friendlies
won't shoot back.

Financially, Foxman and the ADL are raising money from
their usual supporters.  They need only to ring out "the
Christians are coming" and their captive sheep send in
thousands of dollars.   Compare that despicable hate-
mongering to the fact that mainstream evangelical
Christians never raise money by generating fear of Jews.

Thoughtful Americans, whether Jewish, Christian, or non-
religious, can see Foxman's cynical, cowardly, hateful
jihad for what it is.

GOP memo touts new terror attack as way to reverse party's decline

A confidential memo circulating among senior Republican leaders suggests that a new attack by terrorists on U.S. soil could reverse the sagging fortunes of President George W. Bush as well as the GOP and "restore his image as a leader of the American people."

The closely-guarded memo lays out a list of scenarios to bring the Republican party back from the political brink, including a devastating attack by terrorists that could “validate” the President’s war on terror and allow Bush to “unite the country” in a “time of national shock and sorrow.”

The memo says such a reversal in the President's fortunes could keep the party from losing control of Congress in the 2006 midterm elections.

GOP insiders who have seen the memo admit it’s a risky strategy and point out that such scenarios are “blue sky thinking” that often occurs in political planning sessions.

“The President’s popularity was at an all-time high following the 9/11 attacks,” admits one aide. “Americans band together at a time of crisis.”

Other Republicans, however, worry that such a scenario carries high risk, pointing out that an attack might suggest the President has not done enough to protect the country.

“We also have to face the fact that many Americans no longer trust the President,” says a longtime GOP strategist. “That makes it harder for him to become a rallying point.”

The memo outlines other scenarios, including:

--Capture of Osama bin Laden (or proof that he is dead);

--A drastic turnaround in the economy;

--A "successful resolution" of the Iraq war.

GOP memos no longer talk of “victory” in Iraq but use the term “successful resolution.”

“A successful resolution would be us getting out intact and civil war not breaking out until after the midterm elections,” says one insider.

The memo circulates as Tuesday’s disastrous election defeats have left an already dysfunctional White House in chaos, West Wing insiders say, with shouting matches commonplace and the blame game escalating into open warfare.

“This place is like a high-school football locker room after the team lost the big game,” grumbles one Bush administration aide. “Everybody’s pissed and pointing the finger at blame at everybody else.”

Republican gubernatorial losses in Virginia and New Jersey deepened rifts between the Bush administration and Republicans who find the President radioactive. Arguments over whether or not the President should make a last-minute appearance in Virginia to try and help the sagging campaign fortunes of GOP candidate Jerry Kilgore raged until the minute Bush arrived at the rally in Richmond Monday night.

“Cooler heads tried to prevail,” one aide says. “Most knew an appearance by the President would hurt Kilgore rather than help him but (Karl) Rove rammed it through, convincing Bush that he had enough popularity left to make a difference.”

Bush didn’t have any popularity left. Overnight tracking polls showed Kilgore dropped three percentage points after the President’s appearance and Democrat Tim Kaine won on Tuesday.

Conservative Pennsylvania Republican Senator Rick Santorum told radio talk show host Don Imus Wednesday that he does not want the President's help and will stay away from a Bush rally in his state on Friday.

The losses in Virginia and New Jersey, coupled with a resounding defeat of ballot initiatives backed by GOP governor Arnold Schwarzenegger in California have set off alarm klaxons throughout the demoralized Republican party. Pollsters privately tell GOP leaders that unless they stop the slide they could easily lose control of the House in the 2006 midterm elections and may lose the Senate as well.

“In 30 years of sampling public opinion, I’ve never seen such a freefall in public support,” admits one GOP pollster.

Democratic pollster Geoffrey Garin says the usual tricks tried by Republicans no longer work.

"None of their old tricks worked," he says.

Rep. Thomas M. Davis III (R-Va.) admits the GOP is a party mired in its rural base in a country that's becoming less and less rural.

"You play to your rural base, you pay a price," he says. "Our issues blew up in our face."

As Republican political strategists scramble to find a message – any message – that will ring true with voters, GOP leaders in Congress admit privately that control of their party by right-wing extremists makes their recovery all but impossible.

“We’ve made our bed with these people,” admits an aide to House Speaker Denny Hastert. “Now it’s the morning after and the hangover hurts like hell.”

The Congressional Research Service (CRS), an arm of the U.S.
Congress, has issued a memo telling the world what we've

ATF "experts" use arbitrary, made-up standards when they
bring charges against gun owners and testify against us in
court.

Read it carefully. Notice something important. Although the
CRS did an investigation of its own, it relied heavily on
information that came straight from gun-maker Len Savage and
JPFO.

THIS REPORT ALMOST GOT BURIED!

Although JPFO does not lobby Congress or urge anyone else
to, JPFO's work and Len's was instrumental in bringing this
report into the world. We're proud of that fact.

But YOUR work was instrumental, too, if you were one of the
many Americans who asked their representatives to get a copy
of the ATF's testing procedures manual.

No such ATF manual exists. One after one, at gun owners'
urging, congressmen asked the CRS to get the manual. The CRS
asked the ATF to produce the manual. And they hit a wall.

Then something ominous happened. For several weeks, the CRS,
urged on by a frantic Justice Department, planned to bury
this information.

Why? Because these revelations could potentially overturn
hundreds, even thousands, of criminal prosecutions of
innocent gun owners, going back decades.

But YOU kept pushing. And you did it on your own.

Finally the CRS had no choice but to reveal the truth: the
ATF simply "makes it up as they go along."

WHAT THE FUTURE HOLDS

The CRS memo changes nothing by itself. It has no legal
force. But it is the first light Congress has shone on the
ATF in 23 years. It is a _beginning_. It is a tool concerned
gun owners -- and defense attorneys -- can use.

It's also a demonstration of the truth of two well-known
quotations about the power of the grassroots.

Now, what the future holds is, in part, up to you. Take action!

1) READ the CRS report.

2) SHARE IT. Circulate the link to it on email lists. Post
the link on your blog. Let the world know. Think of two
dozen -- or a hundred -- friends who need to see the report
and share it with them.

3) ASK QUESTIONS. "How can I get more gun-rights groups
involved in this?" "When is Congress going to curb the ATF?"
"What can I do about it?" "What should ALL gun owners do
about it?" "What can defense lawyers do with this report?"
"Do I know any lawyers or abused gun owners who should get a
copy of this?"

4) BUILD FORCES to demand that this report be acted upon and
not ignored.

The CRS report isn't dramatic. The language is calm and
legalistic. It has no force in law. The drama comes when
this report inspires OUTRAGE and ACTION.

Thanks to Len Savage, JPFO, and a few hundred gun owners,
you now have proof that backs what abused gun owners have
been shouting all these years.

Now ... run with it.

If American gun owners take this memo and demand action upon
it, this little report will be bigger than the recent
pro-gun vote in Brazil, bigger than forcing FEMA to allow
firearms into refugee settlements. This has the potential to
lead to the dismantling of one of the worst agencies of the
federal government.

Even if it doesn't lead to the end of the ATF, it could
still stop the ruin of thousands of gun owners' lives and
the abuse of millions of gun owners' rights.

In a corollary to Everett Dirksen's famous remark, we always
say "Attack their pension to get their attention." ATF
agents are just working men and women who want to make a
living and retire comfortably. Threatening their security is
the best way to force them to behave.

And make no mistake. Despite the polite language, the
revelations in this report are a major threat to ATF power.

Now ... our next step is to make sure the nobody tolerates
ATF abuses. We must keep the light shining on the CRS report
until every defense lawyer, judge, and leader in the land is
aware of it.

Then we must absolutely refuse to tolerate anyone who
tolerates ATF abuses.

Finally, after decades, WE, the American gun owners, are in
a position to take initiative and control.

"Police Begin Seizing Guns of Civilians - Local police
officers began confiscating weapons from civilians in
preparation for a forced evacuation of the last
holdouts..."

It sounds like a headline from _Unintended Consequences_.
But it's happening now -- today -- in New Orleans.  Law
enforcement officials are confiscating the legally-owned
firearms from law-abiding citizens without due process,
without warrants, and without cause, leaving their owners
utterly defenseless and at the mercy of looters and thugs.

According to an article in the New York Times
(http://tinyurl.com/9ot44), the police superintendent P.
Edwin Compass III decreed that no civilians in New Orleans
will be allowed to carry firearms of any kind, even if they
possess permits to do so. "Only law enforcement are allowed
to have weapons," he said.

(Well, not quite. The New Orleans police department will
not be confiscating the weapons of private security
personnel, guaranteeing that only those wealthy enough to
afford a private bodyguard can be assured of protection).

Second Amendment advocates have long warned that such
confiscations would undoubtedly occur in the event of major
catastrophe. That they were right is not a surprise. Sadly,
neither is the fact that few gun owners have resisted the
confiscations.

Over the years, Americans have become increasingly ignorant
about what rights they really have. Inalienable, individual
rights have given way to "junk rights" -- privileges to be
granted or withheld at the whim of the government. So if
the government demands that they give up their guns, it's
only natural that they should comply. Police officers and
soldiers who are confiscating the firearms are either
equally ignorant about citizens' rights ... or _simply
don't care_ about following unconstitutional orders.

BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH

Raymond M. Clausen Jr., a helicopter crewman in the Vietnam War who was awarded the Medal of Honor for rescuing fellow marines stranded in a minefield under enemy fire, died May 30, 2004 at a hospital in Dallas, Texas. At 56 years old, Mike Clausen, who lived in Ponchatoula, La., died of liver failure.

Mr. Clausen, a native of New Orleans, enlisted in the Marines in May 1966 after attending Southeastern Louisiana University in Hammond.

On Jan. 31, 1970, Private First Class Clausen, assigned to Marine Medium Helicopter Squadron 263 of the First Marine Air Wing, flew as crew chief on a mission to rescue marines who had inadvertently entered an area containing American-laid mines while pursuing enemy troops near Da Nang.

Private Clausen guided the pilot to a landing in a patch of tall grass cleared by one of several mine explosions. Twenty marines were nearby, 11 of them wounded, one already dead, and the other 8 in place, fearful of setting off additional mines if they moved.

Private Clausen disobeyed an order by the helicopter pilot to remain on the craft. "I told him, `No, sir, I'm going off the plane,' " he recalled in an interview with The Dallas Morning News last January.

He leaped from the helicopter, ignored the presence of hidden mines, picked up a wounded marine and carried him back to the craft. Several other marines followed his path to the helicopter, knowing it would be clear of the mines.

Private Clausen then directed the helicopter to another spot and resumed his rescue efforts. His citation said that despite the threat of further mine explosions, he made six trips out of the helicopter. On one of them, a mine detonated while he was carrying a wounded marine, killing another member of the stranded platoon and wounding three other men.

"Only when he was certain that all marines were safely aboard did he signal the pilot to lift the helicopter," his citation said.

President Richard M. Nixon presented Mr. Clausen with the Medal of Honor at the White House on June 15, 1971.

Soon after leaving military service in 1970, Mr. Clausen was in an auto accident that left him in a coma for several months and impaired his ability to work, The Times-Picayune of New Orleans reported. But he spoke often to veterans' organizations.

His wife, Lois, two brothers and a sister, survives Mr. Clausen.

The following email was sent from a Col. who is a surgeon stationed in Iraq. It was sent to his Dad who was a fighter pilot in Vietnam during the war. I'm seeking permission to put it on our website. Verified by Troy Watson.

Dear Dad,

If I ever hear airmen griping and complaining, I jump into them pretty quickly, now. Most people over here have nothing to gripe about compared to Marines. Marines are different. They have a different outlook on life.

One Marine Private was here for several days because he was a lower priority evacuation patient. He insisted on coming to attention and displaying proper military courtesy every morning when I came through on rounds. He was in a great deal of pain, and it was a stressful to watch him work his way off the bed and onto his crutches. I told him he was excused and did not have to come to attention while he was a patient, and he informed me that he was a good Marine and would address "Air Force Colonels standing on my feet, Sir." I had to turn away so he would not see the tear in my eye. He did not have "feet" because we amputated his right leg below the knee on the first night he came in.

I asked a Marine Lance Corporal if there was anything I could get him as I was making rounds one morning. He was an above the knee amputation after an IED blast, and he surprised me when he asked for a trigonometry book. "You enjoy math do you?" He replied, "Not particularly, Sir. I was never good at it, but I need to get good at it, now." "Are you planning on going back to school?" I asked. "No sir, I am planning on shooting artillery. I will slow an infantry platoon down with just one good leg, but I am going to get good at math and learn how to shoot artillery." I hope he does.

I had the sad duty of standing over a young Marine Sgt. when he recovered from anesthesia - despite our best efforts there was just no way to save his left arm, and it had to come off just below the elbow.

"Can I have my arm back, sir?" he asked.

"No, we had to cut it off, we cannot reattach it." I said.

"But can I have my arm?" he asked again.

"You see, we had to cut it off."

He interrupted, "I know you had to cut it off, but I want it back. It must be in a bag or something, Sir."

"I am going to have it stuffed and use it as a club when I get back to my unit." I must have looked shocked because he tried to comfort me, "Don't you worry now, Colonel. You did a fine job, and I hardly hurt at all; besides I scratch and shoot with my other hand anyway."

The Korean War, in which the Marine Corps fought and won some of its most brutal battles, was not without its gallows humor.

During one such conflict a ROK (Republic of Korea) commander, whose unit was fighting along with the Marines, called legendary Marine Chesty Puller to report a major Chinese attack in his sector.

"How many Chinese are attacking you?" asked Puller.

"Many, many Chinese!" replied the excited Korean officer.

Puller asked for another count and got the same answer "Many, many Chinese!"

"Goddammit!" swore Puller, "Put my Marine liaison officer on the radio."

In a minute, an American voice came over the air: "Yes sir?"

"Lieutenant," growled Chesty, "exactly how many Chinese you got up there?"

"Colonel, we got a whole shitload of Chinese up here!"

"Thank God," exclaimed Puller, "at least there's someone up there who knows how to count!"
